Alicia Silverstone and Dr. Oz Discuss Vegan Diet, Weight Loss

Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke to actress Alicia Silverstone about her vegan diet and weight loss on the July 8 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.

On the same episode, Dr. Oz revealed the health dangers of processed chicken.

Silverstone has been a vegan for the past 16 years and credits it for her natural weight loss and good health.

Alicia, who struggled with weight issues during her 20s, said she became vegan because she loves animals, but stuck with it because it improved her sleep, helped her lose weight effortlessly, and got rid of her asthma.

Silverstone detailed her weight-loss and diet tips in her book, The Kind Diet. Alicia revealed she is also raising her three-year-old son, Bear Blu, on a vegan diet, said she feeds him a variety of delicious foods, including:

  • almond butter porridge
  • organic vegetables and fruits
  • brown rice sushi with avocado
  • brown rice cakes with almond butter

Alicia shared her recipes and advice for a healthy vegan pregnancy in her new book, The Kind Mama, where she dishes advice on getting pregnant and staying healthy during pregnancy on a plant-based diet.

Other celebrity vegans include Jared Leto, Samuel L. Jackson (who credits it for his 40-pound weight loss), Pamela Anderson, Scarlett Johansson, Al Sharpton, and Michelle Pfeiffer. They have all credited the plant-based diet for giving them more energy, helping them lose weight without calorie restriction, and staying youthful-looking.

Jackson, 65, said the vegan diet helped him shed 40 pounds and dramatically improved his energy leveks. Samuel L. said he was inspired to go vegan after reading Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.

“Going to [Dr. Esselstyn’s] house and talking to him and his wife Ann [convinced me to adopt a vegan diet],” said Jackson. Jackson said watching Esselstyn’s ground-breaking film, Forks Over Knives, put him over the edge. Since going vegan, Samuel L. said he has never felt or looked better.

“I feel great,” he told reporters at a recent press event. “I have a lot more energy than I used to have. I sleep better. I like the way I look in my clothes better. I don’t cramp as much. I exercise better. I think my circulation has gotten better.”
