Ex-Vegan Fran Drescher Marries After Gluten-Free Weight Loss

Fran Drescher got married Sept. 7 to scientist Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, who is credited for inventing email.

Drescher confirmed the wedding news on Twitter, posting a photo of herself with her new husband, writing Surprise!!!!! We got married!”

Ayyadura also tweeted his happiness, writing, “We had a wonderful wedding. The Hindu swamiji did Ganesha, Murugan and Lakshmi mantras. Very auspicious.”

Ayyadurai holds the patent for email after reportedly creating the program as a teenager. Fran and Shiva met at an event hosted by Deepak Chopra.

At 56, Fran is fitter than ever after losing 15 pounds recently on a gluten-free vegan diet. “The Nanny” star said she overhauled her diet after experiencing low energy and weight gain.

Instead of taking prescription medications (as recommended by her doctors), Drescher opted to clean up her diet and has never felt better. Fran adopted a gluten-free, vegan diet that eliminated alcohol and all animal products in 2012.

Drescher said her vegan diet dramatically improved her energy and fueled easy, natural weight loss. “I wasn’t able to knock off that kind of weight in years,” Fran said on the Wendy Williams Show.

“I wasn’t feeling well and I went to a bunch of doctors. Everybody had different prescriptions for all my symptoms and I just decided, ‘No more. I’m going to eat differently, clean up my act. And so I cut out alcohol and I became gluten-free and vegan.”

No Longer Vegan

In addition to weight loss, Fran credited her gluten-free, alcohol-free vegan diet for her youthful complexion. “I am getting a lot of compliments on my skin and how good I look,” said Drescher, who recently began adding meat back into her diet.

Meanwhile, other celebrities are sold on the weight loss and health benefits of a vegan diet, including Samuel L. Jackson, who attributed his recent 40-pound weight loss to the vegan diet.

Samuel L. said he was inspired to go vegan after reading Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, and spending time with the renowned vegan cardiologist. “Going to [Dr. Esselstyn’s] house and talking to him and his wife Ann [convinced me to adopt a vegan diet],” said Jackson.

Al Sharpton, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jared Leto have also credited the plant-based diet for giving them more energy, helping them lose weight, and staying youthful-looking. Bill Clinton said his mostly vegan diet is responsible for his 30-pound weight loss and for reversing his heart disease.

Experiencing easy weight loss and improved health on a vegan diet isn’t surprising to medical experts like Dr. Joel Fuhrman. “The more greens you eat, the more weight you will lose,” said Fuhrman, author of The End of Dieting.

Dr. David Katz, author of Disease-Proof, agrees. “If you shift to a diet more about plant-based foods, you are likelier to live healthier and experience less chronic disease,” said Katz, director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.
