Wheat Belly: Grain-Free Low Carb Diet Reverses Diabetes, Aids Weight Loss and Depression

You can easily reverse diabetes with a wheat-free diet, says cardiologist.

Cardiologist Dr. William Davis said you can enjoy natural weight loss and easily reverse diabetes by following a low-carb, wheat-free diet.

“The majority of diabetes is reversible,” Dr. Davis wrote on his blog. “Most people can make the choice to have diabetes or to not have it. This is because it is caused by diet. Sadly, it is caused by conventional advice to ‘cut your fat and eat healthy whole grains.’

“People often blame too many soft drinks and junk food, but there are many people who try to eat well and don’t drink or eat sugary foods yet have diabetes. This is due to grains.”

Davis, author of  Wheat Belly Total Health, made the remarks in an October 2013 open letter to actor Tom Hanks, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

While Hanks said his dramatic weight fluctuations over the years contributed to his diabetes, he also admitted he was genetically predisposed to the condition.

The Oscar winner said he’s managing his diabetes through diet and exercise, but Dr. Davis said Hanks can eliminate the disease altogether simply by following a grain-free diet.

Grain Free Diet Aids Depression and Arthritis

In his practice, Davis observed that patients experienced relief from diabetes, joint pain, heart disease, inflammatory disorders, acid reflux, asthma, migraines, and depression by eliminating wheat from their diets.

“More than sugary foods, grains raise blood sugar to high levels,” said Dr. Davis, who also wrote the New York Times bestseller, Wheat Belly. “The glycemic indexes, for instance, of whole wheat bread, oatmeal, and multi-grain breads are among the highest of all foods. They ENSURE having high blood sugars.”

Davis pointed out that two slices of whole wheat bread raises blood sugar higher than six teaspoons of sugar. To ensure healthy blood sugar and optimal health, he suggests consuming a low-carb, high-fat diet that incorporates plenty of high-quality animal fats, olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin D, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.

“Those of us who follow the above principles drop fasting blood sugar and HbA1c precipitously, often enough to get off medication, reduce HbA1c into the 5.0% range, and become assuredly NON-diabetic,” he said.

On Sept. 24, Davis visited the Dr. Oz Show, where he said low carb, wheat-free diets like the Paleo and ketogenic diets accelerate weight loss and prevent depression, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
