Jake Gyllenhaal is ripped to shreds after gaining 15 pounds of muscle to play a struggling boxer in the drama “Southpaw.”
Gyllenhaal got jacked up by doing intense boxing workouts twice a day, seven days a week, Examiner reported.
“I had Jake training twice a day in the boxing ring,” said director Antoine Fuqua. “He did two-a-days, seven days a week. I pretty much had him with me and my trainer every day.”
Fuqua also took Gyllenhaal to see almost every boxing match his schedule allowed and had him train at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas. In New York, Jake trained at Church Gym with real-life boxers. “We literally turned him into a beast,” said Fuqua.
Fuqua said he was blown away by Gyllenhaal’s dedication and discipline and is confident “Southpaw” will change how fans view the actor.
“Jake, he’s a very electric, powerful fighter in this movie, and a guy who fights for his daughter,” said Fuqua. “I’m confident this will change how people see Jake as a leading man.”
Before “Southpaw,” Jake lost 30 pounds to play a struggling crime reporter in “Nightcrawler.” Gyllenhaal said his mother was extremely worried about his health following his shocking 30-pound weight loss.
The 6-foot-tall Jake, who’s normally a buff 180 pounds, starved himself down to 150 pounds for “Nightcrawler.” Gyllenhaal said his extreme low-calorie crash diet was extremely tough.
Jake subsisted on small pieces of meat, crackers or kale salad during the day and often didn’t eat anything at all at night. For exercise, Jake often ran 15 miles from his house to the set.
While most people resolve to work out more, Gyllenhaal is a self-professed workout addict who has to make an effort to exercise less. “I’ve had to teach myself to slow down a bit,” Jake said. “Because I get so into [working out], it becomes a real addiction.”
