Natalie Portman got scary-skinny for her role as a prima ballerina in “Black Swan” to not only look the look of a ballerina but also because of the tough physical requirements of the role. Co-star Mila Kunis also lost a frightening amount of weight.
In fact, Portman and Kunis got so thin at one point at that director Darren Aronofsky insisted they eat more.
“At a certain point I looked at [Natalie's] back and she was so skinny and so cut,” Aronofsky tells Access Hollywood. “I was like, ‘Natalie, start eating,’ I made sure she had a bunch of food in her trailer.

“[Natalie] took [the role] very seriously. These dancers get really, really skinny.”
Like castmate Mila, the petite 5’3″ Portman lost 20 pounds, and said dealing with the weight loss was “very challenging physically.”
As soon as filming wrapped, Portman says she stopped working out and carbo-loaded to add some bulk back to her frame.
“The [day after shooting ended] I was like, pasta, pasta, pasta! No working out,” Natalie recounts. “It was pretty immediate. I was ready to leave the ballet life.
“I was like, ‘Please don’t let there be re-shoots for this [film] because I don’t think I could get back into the costumes!’”
In addition to their extreme dieting, Natalie and Mila filmed a sizzling lesbian sex scene, but Kunis insists it wasn’t purely for titillation.
“[The scene] has a point to the film,” says Mila.
“So, ultimately, if people walk out and that’s all they remember, that’s unfortunate. There’s a reason for it, It’s not just there for shock value.”
The film, which also stars Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder focuses on Nina (Portman), a New York City ballerina who is completely obsessed with her profession.
She is cast to perform the lead role in Swan Lake, but not if new new dancer, Lily (Kunis) has anything to say about it. Their rivalry takes twists and turns as the movie progresses.
Black Swan opens in theaters Dec. 3.
