Kim Kardashian revealed that she has itchy and painful disease psoriasis on last night’s episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” The skin affliction is inherited with no known cure. But there are some things she can do.
The angry red rash, which is triggered by stress, first appears on her legs and can spread all over her body.
“My career is doing ad campaigns and swimsuit photo shoots,” she said. “People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect.”
“When I gain a pound, it’s in the headlines. Imagine what the tabloids would do to me if they saw all these spots?”
Among some of the misconceptions about the condition, psoriasis is not caused by a virus and it’s not contagious.
Rather it is an auto-immune reaction caused by the nerves in the skin. The nerves get excited and overproduce cells which cause the rough, red patches.
Kim’s mother Kris Jenner, suffers from it too, and likely pass it to her daughter.
“I got it for the first time when I was exactly your age,’ Kris said on the show. “I cried myself to sleep for months.”
Kim’s doctor’s advice, to slow down and de-stress her life, is typical advice.
Bath solutions and moisturizers, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly are also used to help reduce the dryness which accompanies the build-up of skin breakouts. Also vitamin D and sunlight are said to help, according to some medical references.
But there are complications. For more potent drugs, taken internally, liver or kidney function may be impaired and pregnancy must be avoided for the majority of these treatments.
Most people experience a recurrence of psoriasis after systemic treatment is discontinued
For Kardashian, who has made a living off her beauty and glowing skin, the disease could be problematic for the rest of her life.
“I have to wear a sports bra and I have this rash all over my stomach,’ she cries. ‘What will the producers say? In a photoshoot they can just photo-shop it out but this is on video. They can’t hide this.”
