Demi Lovato reveals that she turned to two unlikely sources for help while she struggled in rehab to come to grips with bulima and a bipolar disorder–Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez.
Lovato, who completed a three-month stint in rehab earlier this year, said both Kim and Selena reached out to her while she was undergoing treatment.
“The people that were calling me while I was [in treatment] were Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez,” Lovato tells People. “Those two girls, they meant the world to me. They still do.
“I feel like there are some people that you’re friends with that talk to you on Twitter or you text, but the people that are really there for me are the people that were there for me when I went into treatment.”
Selena, 18, was recently hospitalized for malnutrition because of her rigorous concert schedule, but has since recovered.
Kardashian, 30, has never admitted suffering from an eating disorder, but admits that being in the public eye puts her under constant pressure to look good.
“People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect,” Kim recently lamented. “When I gain a pound, it’s in the headlines.”
Like other Hollywood starlets, Lovato, 19, has said she feels extreme pressure in Hollywood to be super-skinny.
“It was the time in the tabloids when very, very skinny girls were on the cover of every magazine, and that’s what I was looking up to,” Demi recalls.
“That’s what I had to idolize. I don’t want that for young girls to idolize.”
Lovato, who was in rehab from Oct. 2010 to Janu. 2011, learned from therapy how to cope with negative feelings.
“So many things were going great in my life [right before I checked into rehab], and then all of a sudden my personal life just went down at crazy speeds,” she says. “I had a negative breakdown and it changed my life forever.”
“But if I hadn’t gone into treatment, I don’t know if I’d even be sitting here today or, if I’d be alive today.”
Lovato said she has gained 30 pounds since January, but is healthier and happier than ever.
Ironically, Demi came under fire recently after fans teased her for gaining weight in the months following rehab.
In response, a defiant Lovato tweeted in August: “I’ve gained weight. Get over it. That’s what happens when you get out of treatment for AN EATING DISORDER.”
Demi quickly deleted that Twitter post but followed up with this message: “Guess what, I’m healthy and happy, and if you’re hating on my weight you obviously aren’t.”
