Valerie Bertinelli became a weight loss darling when she lost 50 pounds and kept it off. Now she faces a real test, the holidays, just like everyone else. But she has a plan and she shares it.
“You know what, I lose weight, not gain it, during the holidays,” she told People.
“You have more days off, so you have more time to go to the gym and be active. I have so much more time to work out this time of year.”
But that doesn’t mean the 51-year-old star doesn’t indulge like the rest of us.
“My dieting philosophy is, you never have to give up anything completely,” she tells Woman’s Day, in the new January issue.

“If there’s something you really like, you’ll always be pining for it. Then, if it’s put in front of you, you’ll go crazy for it,” she says.
She reveals, for example, that she’s a sucker for movie popcorn.
“I don’t have it very often because I know there’s a healthier alternative in unbuttered popcorn and it’s still satisfying,” she tells the magazine.
“But occasionally I’ll indulge when [husband Tom Vitale] and I go to the movies, and I’m not going to feel guilty about it,” says Bertinelli, who’s currently starring in sit-com “Hot in Cleveland.”
The former “One Day at a Time” star capped off her return to fitness in April 2010 when she ran in the Boston Marathon to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Bertinelli says she struggled with weight issues over the years, but lost 50 pounds and become a spokesperson for the Jenny Craig weight-loss program.
She the first celebrity to grace the cover of Women’s Day in 20 years. The magazine hits newsstands on Dec. 20.
