Singer Jessica Simpson, who seems like she’s been pregnant forever, finally gave birth today to baby girl last night (Apr. 30) Maxwell Drew Johnson weighs nearly 10 pounds, considerd large for a female newborn.
Simpson, 31, and fiancé Eric Johnson posted the news on Jessica’s Web site. “Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl, Maxwell Drew Johnson,” Jessica wrote.
“We are so grateful for all the love, support and prayers we have received. This is been the greatest experience of our lives,” she added.
The baby weighed just shy of 10 pounds, at nine pounds, 13-ounces. And, she is 21 and 3/4 inches long. The average weight for a female is between six and eight pounds and 18 inches to 21 inches in length at full gestation.
Johnson, who is 6’3″ tall and weighs 250 pounds and plays pro football as a tight end. He’s currently a free agent. In contrast, Simpson is just over 5 feet tall.
She was criticized for her weight gain and was called everything from “a house,” to and “an absolute porker.” She was featured nude on the cover of Elle magazine in a classic celebrity pose.
Doctors say putting on 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy is healthiest. And while it’s unclear how much weight Simpson has gained, critics have accused her of “letting go” and being a bad role model for pregnant women,” according to ABC News.
Simpson offically was due on April 21, but it’s not uncommon for gestation to run longer with first-born children. Due dates are also always estimates.
There was no word on whether the birth was induced or came naturally or whether Simpson had a cesarean section.
Jessica’s mother and sister Ashlee, and Johnson’s parents were spotted at the hospital. Jessica was last seen out and about on Sunday (Apr. 30), when she went for a drive with her fiancé.
Jessica’s baby-watch was nerve-frazzling for celebrities. “Has Jessica Simpson had that baby yet?! I’m getting anxious,” tweeted Katy Perry.
