Bethenny Frankel’s bizarre marriage to Jason Hoppy has finally crashed and burned after a long, and well-publicized descent into divorce hell. Bethenny filed the papers in New York. What went wrong?
Frankel, 42, was like so many other professional Manhattan women. She held out for the perfect husband, while her biological clock ticked away on her child-bearing years.
They met in 2008 and after on-again, off-again dating became engaged 11 months later. The couple married in March 2010 at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York City.
From the outset, the romance and wedding seemed made-for-television. Frankel documented the entire courtship on her show “Bethenny’s Getting Married.”
Bethenny wasted no time getting pregnant with daughter Bryn, now 2.
In little more than three months after getting married, however, Frankel was forced to fight off rumors that Hoppy, a pharmaceutical sales rep and former personal trainer, was gay. Critics claimed the marriage was merely a showmance for her reality shows.
Fellow reality personality and rival Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth claimed on national television that Hoppy’s homosexuality was an open secret.
At the time, Bethenny didn’t directly address the accusations. But “The View’s” Whoopi Goldberg revealed that she had denied them to her. Still, it did little to quell the whispers.
Bethenny added fuel to the fire herself when she revealed on the debut of her new reality show “Bethenny Ever After” that she and Hoppy had stopped having sex. “Jason’s penis has cobwebs on it,” she told Life & Style magazine. “Intimacy is challenging.”
The reality star blamed her hectic life, which included her reality show, promoting her Skinnygirl line and writing books. And their personality differences.
“We come from totally different backgrounds, and we’re going through it. I’m in therapy. I’ve always been good at business, but I’ve always struggled with relationships,” she confessed.
“I’m having a rough time,” she added. But it was never certain whether she was talking about her real life or make-up drama for her reality show.
Reports of trouble in her marriage picked up again last year and thrust Frankel back onto tabloid magazine covers. Again questions arose whether the marital problems were for publicity.
It seemed Frankel might be taking a page from Kris Jenner and husband Bruce Jenner, whose divorce rumors are a tabloid staple.
But Frankel finally pulled the trigger. “It brings me great sadness to say that Jason and I are separating,” she said in a Dec. 23 statement. “This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family.”
It seems almost a given, that Frankel has a new story line for her reality career.
