Heidi Montag is back-peddling furiously after claims that she is addicted to plastic surgery drew a torrent of criticism. She isn’t addicted at all, she now says. Instead, let’s just say she’s a fame-oholic.
What was Heidi thinking? The reality television star, 23, is so desperate to grab the spotlight, she made up the outrageous claim apparently without realizing the scorn it would draw.

She appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America this morning (Jan. 19) to try to calm the controversy. “I would say that none of those people know me at all, and that’s just a judgment. I’m not addicted. If I were addicted, I would have had 10 plastic surgeries.”
What she had, actually, was 10 “procedures” on the same day, back in November, in addition to a previous surgery three years ago.
Celebrity Health & Fitness reported when the news broke on the speciousness of her claims. Nonetheless People magazine put her on the cover and Montag said in the story she was “beyond obsessed” with having work done.
It was a high price to pay for the attention, and a low point for People magazine.
“I think I look like myself. I think I just look like a different, improved version of myself,” she said during the interview.
Montag was widely criticized for sending a negative message to young girls, suggesting that plastic surgery is a way to overcome insecurities about your looks.
Montag drew additional scorn because of her age and because she was generally considered to be beautiful before any surgery.
Where would you draw the line? Montag says her line of work makes alterations necessary.
“I’m in a different industry,” she said, “and I have to do things that are going to make me happy at the end of the day.”
“I’m living in my skin, and I look in the mirror and it’s my career and my life, and you only have one. So, I want to take advantage of everything and be the best me, in and out, every way,” she said.
Montag appeared on the MTV cable series “The Hills” and has tried to launch a fashion and singing career without much success.
