Actor Jim Carrey says his latest film, Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” mirrors his own journey out of depression.
The actor has suffered from the mood disorder since 1994 and has admitted taking prescription drugs to cope with the instability in his life. He has been married and divorced twice, to waitress Melissa Wormer for eight years and to actress Lauren Holly for ten months.
But he said starring in the heartwarming holiday tale helped him to find perspective on his own life.
Indeed, one of the benefits of the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays is their ability to give people pause to reflect on their lives and think about positive ways to change them.
“Everybody loves a good transformational story,” he explains. “Somebody who sees the light and finds out what’s important in life. It was wonderful to get to the bottom of a character I’ve seen done a hundred different ways,” he adds.
Carrey, 47, also credits other factors in his turnaround. He says there is now “more light” in his life, since he banished prescription drugs, switched to a healthy diet and became step-father to his partner Jenny McCarthy’s autistic six year old son Evan.
“I created tools to help my treatment and I went down a path with some amazing scientific minds who are using supplemental treatments for depression,” he said.
Carry plays the role of Scrooge, as well as the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future in the film. He enjoyed showing Evan the timeless tale and sitting with him through it for the first time.
“I’m so happy to have a beautiful family and to be able to sit there with Evan showing him clips of the movie,” he told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.
“I took him through the scary parts and told him the ghost was coming and he loved it.”

Jim Carrey seems to be a great guy with a good heart. Everyone deals with something in thier lives and I hate that he is being judged and they don’t even know him. I wish him the best. :)
