Honey Boo Boo’s mother, Mama June credits a low-carb diet for her stunning 150-pound weight loss.

Mama June Shannon has lost 150 pounds and six dress sizes by eating a lot of chicken, cheese cubes and cutting back on sugary sodas and doughnuts, as Celebrity Health Fitness has reported.

June, who once tipped the scales at 400 pounds, is proud of her appearance. “I’m happy with the way I am now, but I was also happy with myself when I was 400 pounds,” said Mama June. “I taught myself and my kids that you’ve got to be comfortable no matter what your size.”

June, 34, said her diet has changed dramatically from the past, but she’s okay with it.

“I haven’t been drinking as much soda — just water and stuff,” said Shannon. “We’ve been eating a lot of chicken and baked foods. I also snack on grapes and cheese cubes throughout the day.”

Mama June’s dramatic weight loss has inspired her daughters, Anna, 19, Jessica, 17, Lauryn “Pumpkin,” 14, and Alana (Honey Boo Boo), 8, to lose weight. “Pumpkin is down nine pounds and Alana has lost weight, too,” said June.

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein diet with a macronutrient ratio of roughly 65 percent fat, five percent carbs and 30 percent protein.

Colette Heimowitz, vice president of Atkins Nutritionals, told me low-carb diets aid weight loss because reducing carbs and eating more healthy fats suppress appetite.

“Low-carb, high fat diets curb hunger better than low-fat diets because fat keeps you feeling full,” explained Heimowitz, author of The New Atkins Made Easy.

While Kim Kardashian’s star status has raised the popularity of the Atkins and ketogenic diets for weight loss, research indicates LCHF diets have various health applications, including combating depression, reversing type 2 diabetes, and managing epilepsy.

Obesity expert Dr. Jeff Volek, author of New Atkins for a New You, has followed the ketogenic diet for the past 20 years. He agrees the LCHF Atkins and ketogenic diets accelerate weight loss, improve mood, reverse type 2 diabetes, and prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer.

“It was nothing short of an epiphany when I changed to a ketogenic diet 20 years ago,” Dr. Volek, author of the “Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living,” told me. “I felt better, more satiated, and had more consistent energy.”

Bariatric surgeon Dr. Eric Westman agrees. Dr. Westman has helped hundreds of morbidly obese people lose thousands of pounds on the low-carb Atkins, Paleo and ketogenic diets.

Low carb diets fuel rapid weight loss by forcing the body to burn fat for fuel, said Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity.
