Melissa Rivers has inherited the bulk of her mom Joan Rivers’ estate, totaling more than $110 million.
Melissa, Joan’s only child, inherited $75 million in cash and Joan’s $35 million condo on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, according to multiple press reports.
Melissa is understandably unhappy despite her vast inheritance. “It’s no consolation for losing her mother so soon,” said a source.
The news comes a week after the New York City Medical Examiners Office revealed the cause of Joan Rivers’ death as brain damage due to lack of oxygen.
Toxicology reports also revealed Rivers had been sedated with Propofol, contradicting statements from Yorkville Endoscopy, which insisted they had never given her Propofol or any general anesthesia.
In January 2015, Melissa filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Yorkville Endoscopy and Joan’s personal physician, Dr. Gwen Korovin, amid allegations of potential negligence. Attorneys say Melissa could be awarded tens of millions of dollars if the negligence claims are true, Examiner reported.
In the lawsuit, Melissa accused Joan’s doctors of acting like “groupies” and letting her suffer irreparable brain damage after she stopped breathing for almost 20 minutes during a routine throat surgery she had sought to diagnose a mild sore throat.
During the time Joan was in cardiac arrest, Cohen and Korovin, snapped selfies and photos of each other and ignored the anesthesiologist’s urgent requests to immediately resuscitate her, Melissa alleged.
During her life and career, Joan Rivers overcame bankruptcy, depression, and numerous firings from entertainment gigs. She said she survived by moving forward no matter, and encouraged others to never give up. Joan detailed her struggles (and triumphs) in her book Bouncing Back: I’ve Survived Everything.
Amazingly, sales of Rivers’ books spiked 90,000% shortly after her tragic death. Rivers never held back on sharing her opinions on everything, from relationships to motherhood to aging and plastic surgery. Joan revealed those thoughts in her July 2014 memoir, Diary of a Mad Diva.
