“Duck Dynasty’ stars Alan Robertson and his wife Lisa expose dark family secrets, including extramarital affairs, alcoholism and sexual molestation, in their shocking tell-all book.
In A New Season: A Robertson Family Love Story of Brokenness and Redemption, Lisa reveals she was sexually molested for seven years by a male relative. Lisa later got pregnant and had an abortion at age 17.
Looking back, Lisa regrets getting the abortion and said she went public with it in her book to help other women who are in similar situations.
“I thought it was important to include because there are people out there who this has happened to,” Robertson told Us.
“I had one girl tell me she has cried herself to sleep just about every night for the last 25 years after having an abortion, and nobody else knows about it.
“She regretted it all this time, but she just can’t seem to find a place of healing from it. So I thought it was a very unique thing for somebody who is in our position to say, ‘Look, I did this. And you can find healing and comfort from Jesus in it.’”In their book, Lisa also reveals she had a 14-month extramarital affair with an old boyfriend in 1999. She and Al, who have two children, have since worked on their marriage.
Meanwhile, Alan recounts his battles with alcoholism and drug abuse at the tender age of 15. Robertson said his self-destructive behavior caused huge problems in his marriage, ultimately leading to Lisa’s affair.
“Our relationship started badly because of me. It was my fault,” Al wrote in A New Season. “Lisa was a good girl and I just took her down the wrong path. Then I dumped her and took off to New Orleans because I was trying to find myself.”
Al said his family urged him to dump Lisa after her affair but he refused. “It was one of the most difficult things our family has ever gone through,” said Robertson.
“What I will say is that once I made the decision that I was in a place where I could forgive Lisa and I wanted our marriage to work, they got on board behind me.”
Al and Lisa Robertson have starred on the A&E series Duck Dynasty since 2012. The reality TV show chronicles the lives of the Robertson family, who run a successful family-owned business called Duck Commander.
