Gwen Stefani’s anti-aging fitness and weight loss secrets are a low-carb, mostly vegan, diet and rigorous exercise, Examiner reported.
Despite being a stone fox at 45, Stefani never thought she’d end up with a hot husband like Bush guitarist Gavin Rossdale, to whom she has been married since 2002.
“I never really saw myself landing a guy that hot,” Gwen told Cosmopolitan. “I definitely wasn’t the super-cute cheerleader so I never saw myself getting somebody like that. I do think he’s quite handsome. It’s not the most important thing about him, but it is nice, and he makes really cute babies!”
Stefani said the secret to their happy marriage is maintaining her sense of self despite being part of a high-profile couple. “We go through so much together it’s a miracle that we could stay together this long,” said Gwen.
“[Gavin’s] on a short tour right now, and he wrote me the sweetest note this morning. It’s good to have those days when we both do our own things. I think that’s what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality. That’s especially important for women. It’s hard to find time for yourself.”
Stefani, a workout fanatic, also makes health and fitness a top priority. Gwen follows a low-carb, mostly vegan, diet and exercises five days a week, Examiner reported. Stefani isn’t 100% vegan because she sometimes eats eggs and tuna, but is mostly vegan.
Vegan diets have anti-aging health benefits and promote natural weight loss, said Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.
“A diet of minimally processed foods close to nature — predominantly plants — is decisively associated with health promotion and disease prevention,” said Dr. Katz, author of Disease-Proof.
Dr. Neal Barnard agrees. “Studies suggest that free radicals [toxic molecules that form in the body] contribute to aging,” said Barnard, author of 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart. “A vegan diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, is full of antioxidants which help protect the body from damage by free radicals.”
‘I Work Out Like a Man’
Stefani’s workout routine usually includes a combination of intense cardio exercise and weight lifting. While many celebrities do low-impact exercise such as yoga and Pilates, Gwen prefers more hard-core workouts.
“I’m more like a man: I like going to the gym and lifting weights or doing a little boxing,” said Stefani.
The athletic 5-foot-6 Gwen, who admits that staying thin is a “daily struggle,” said she gets wracked with guilt whenever she skips a workout. “I work out five days a week, I can’t imagine not doing it,” she said.
Despite her busy schedule juggling a thriving career and raising three boys, Stefani, a self-professed makeup junkie, always takes time to look her best.
“I like to make my husband like me more, and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup,” said Gwen, who has her own nail polish line and fragrance. “I wear make up every single day. I don’t feel energized until I’ve put it on. Then I’m ready to go.”
