Illusionist Penn Jillette credited a low-calorie, mostly vegan diet for his jaw-dropping 120-pound weight loss in 120 days without exercise (or magic!).
Jillette followed a vegan-style, 1,000-calorie-a-day diet from December 2014 and April 2015, as Celebrity Health Fitness has reported.
The 6-foot-6 Penn shed 120 pounds in 120 days without exercise, dropping from 330 pounds to 210 pounds, and lost over 10 inches off his waist.
As a result of his incredible weight loss, Jillette no longer needs to take drugs for his high blood pressure. “I was on six very powerful meds to bring the blood pressure down,” said Penn, 60.
“My doctor said I needed to get my weight down, and if I brought it down 30 or 40 pounds it would be a little easier to control. And then he said something in passing that completely blew my mind. He said, ‘If you got down to 230, you probably wouldn’t need any of the meds.”
On his mostly vegan diet, Jillette lost almost a pound a day without exercise.
Since reaching his goal weight on March 5 (his 60th birthday), Penn follows a mostly vegan diet based on Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Nutritarian diet, which excludes animal products, processed grains, added sugar and salt.
Penn dropped 10 pant sizes — from a waist size of 44 inches to an impressive 34! “I eat unbelievable amounts of food but just very, very, very healthy food,” said Jillette.
After reaching his goal weight, Jillette started exercising, incorporating 7-minute high-intensity interval training workouts, weightlifting, juggling and 10-mile tricycle rides, TheImproper reported.
Penn, who has two young children, said his weight loss has improved every aspect of his life. “I have so much energy and I feel so good,” said Jillette. “I’m just plain happier.”
The anti-aging weight loss and health benefits of a vegan diet are no surprise to Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.
“A diet of minimally processed foods close to nature — predominantly plants — is decisively associated with health promotion and disease prevention,” said Dr. Katz, author of Disease-Proof.
Dr. Neal Barnard agrees. “Studies suggest that free radicals [toxic molecules that form in the body] contribute to aging,” said Barnard, author of 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart. “A vegan diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, is full of antioxidants which help protect the body from damage by free radicals.”
