Celebrity chef Sandra Lee will get a double mastectomy this week after being diagnosed with breast cancer six weeks ago. Lee recently got a lumpectomy.
Lee, 48, received her breast cancer diagnosis as she was doing a photoshoot for being named one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People in the World.
Amazingly, Sandra’s cancer was detected during a routine mammogram.
“Life can turn on a dime,” Sandra told Good Morning America May 12 (see video). “My doctor called me a poster girl for mammography.”
Lee, who has been dating New York Governor Andrew Cuomo since 2005, decided to get a double mastectomy even though her breast cancer can be treated with radiation.
“I never want to go through this again,” said Sandra, who’s hoping her aggressive approach via the double mastectomy will ensure her breast cancer does not return again.
Sandra, who has written more than a dozen best-selling Semi Homemade cookbooks, hopes her story will inspire other women to get mammograms so they can detect their breast cancer early.
“I plan to spread the word about early detection,” said Lee, author of Semi-Homemade The Complete Cookbook.
Sandra is happy and grateful her partner, Andrew Cuomo, has been extremely supportive and will stand by her side during her breast cancer treatment.
In 2011, Lee revealed she was physically and emotionally abused by her drug-addicted stepfather after being abandoned by her teenage mother as a baby.
