The low-carb Paleo diet has been praised for its weight loss and disease-preventing health benefits, but ballerina Lauren Fadeley credits Paleo for keeping her slim but strong.
Fadeley, a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet, follows the Paleo diet Monday through Friday, and then allows herself “cheat” meals on the weekends.
Lauren said the gluten-free Paleo diet helps her stay ballerina-skinny and strong at the same time.
“[Paleo] satisfies me so I don’t feel hungry, but my stomach is good and I don’t have digestive problems,” Fadeley told Pop Sugar. “We have to wear a leotard all day long and stare at ourselves in a mirror — that can get a little hard!”
Lauren’s daily diet consists of fresh vegetables, lean proteins, nuts, dark chocolate and Paleo-friendly desserts like coconut milk ice cream. On the weekends, Fadeley enjoys tacos, tortilla chips and the occasional bagel.
Lauren said the Paleo diet enables her to maintain her energy without starving or depriving herself. “Dancers do eat!” she said. “You can’t not eat to do this.”
The Paleo diet emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, fats, vegetables and fruits, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, starches, alcohol and processed foods.
Paleo is the most popular diet today and boasts a huge celebrity following, including Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and country superstar Tim McGraw, who credited a low-carb Paleo diet and CrossFit workouts for his stunning 40-pound weight loss.
Research shows the Paleo diet promotes natural weight loss, reduces blood pressure, and prevents cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer’s.
A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates the Paleo diet is twice as effective as other diets for promoting weight loss and reducing belly fat.
“Clinical trials have shown the Paleo Diet is the optimum diet that can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, markers of inflammation, help with weight loss, reduce acne, promote optimum health and athletic performance,” said Loren Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet for Athletes and The Real Paleo Diet Cookbook.
Fitness expert Robb Wolf said the gluten-free Paleo eating plan can enhance weight loss and boost energy.
“The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the only nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic,” said Wolf, author of The Paleo Solution.
