Kendall Jenner is a sought-after model now, but suffered from teenage acne so bad that it damaged her self-esteem.
Kendall, 19, said acne “ruined her life” and made her extremely self-conscious.
“Where it really impacted me was how self-conscious I became about it,” Jenner wrote on her blog. “It completely ruined my self-esteem. I wouldn’t even look at people when I talked to them. I felt like such an outcast; when I spoke, it was with my hand covering my face.”
Kendall said her three older sisters — Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian — had also dealt with teenage acne and helped her cope.
“I was thankful we always talked about it in my family,” said Jenner. “They would help me work on my feelings about it and how I would move past that stage of my life. I remember on Christmas Eve one year, I was sitting in my bedroom upstairs crying and Kim walked in and we talked about it together — she felt so bad for me.”
Kendall has been acne-free for three years and recently got Laser Genesis treatment, which gets rid of acne scars, redness and large pores.
Kendall also moisturizes her skin as much as possible to prevent wrinkles and keep her skin dewy.
“My moisturizer is by Elta MD, and it’s really good,” said Kendall. “It has sunscreen in it, so I wear sunscreen every day.”
Kendall, who’s one of the highest paid models in the world, has credited a high-protein diet, detox tea and regular workouts for her supermodel body, Examiner reported.
“I like running,” said Kendall. “I’ve been trying to get back into it.”
Jenner, who also enjoys hiking, works out four days a week with celebrity fitness expert Gunnar Peterson, who helped Khloe Kardashian lose 35 pounds.
“I do whatever he tells me to do, some cardio, some muscle-building to tone myself up,” said Kendall. “I’ll run to a gym and get on the treadmill. I also do a lot of ab work and planking.”
Jenner has been on fire for the past year, racking up high-profile magazine photo spreads and landing coveted modeling contracts with Estee Lauder, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy and Balmain.
Kendall, who has walked the runways in New York, Paris, London and Milan, said her fashion-week diet secrets include detox tea, plenty of sleep and lots of water.
“I usually start my day off with a cup of detox tea,” said Jenner. “I have 12 cups a day.” For snacks, Kendall eats low-sugar fruits like apples and strawberries and avoids processed junk food.
In 2014, Kendall’s half-sister, Kim Kardashian, lost 56 pounds in six months on a low carb ketogenic-style Atkins diet that limited her daily carb intake to less than 60 grams.
Limiting carbs encourages your body to burn fat for fuel, said Dr. Eric Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity. Low-carb diet expert Dr. Jeff Volek agrees.
“Carbohydrate restriction is the proverbial ‘silver bullet’ for managing insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes,” said Volek, author of the bestseller, The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living.
“Slowly, I’m working towards not caring and I’m just in so much of a better place about it all now that I’m older,” said Kendall. “I realized that it’s a part of life for some people and it doesn’t define who you are.”
