A nine-year-old boy reversed Type 1 diabetes symptoms after following a ketogenic Paleo diet for six days, according to researchers at the University of Pécs in Hungary.
The boy was placed on a ketogenic Paleo diet in February 2014 after having been on insulin therapy for six weeks.
During the time the boy was on insulin, his blood sugar fluctuated wildly, and he suffered from chronic fatigue, eczema and a bloated abdomen.
Just six days after adopting a modified ketogenic Paleo diet, the boy’s blood sugar normalized and he was able to stop taking insulin.
Moreover, his eczema and bloated stomach disappeared, and he no longer gets upper respiratory tract infections, thanks to his new diet. The boy’s case study was published in the International Journal of Case Reports and Images.
The boy’s modified keto Paleo diet was a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet that eliminated vegetables, fruits, artificial sweeteners and vegetable oils. The boy ate three meals a day consisting only of animal meats and fat, offal and eggs with a fat:protein ratio of about 2:1.
He was allowed to consume small amounts of honey, and made sure he was in ketosis by using ketone strips to monitor his blood glucose and blood ketones.
The boy has been on a ketogenic Paleo diet for the past 19 months, and has not had a recurrence of hypoglycemic episodes or any other diabetic symptoms.
The nine-year-old boy’s reversal of his Type 1 diabetes mirrored the results of a previous study involving a 19-year-old diabetic boy, who also was able to get off insulin and reverse his diabetes on a keto Paleo diet.
“We opine that the Paleolithic ketogenic diet ensures normal glucose levels and can be maintained on the long term in those patients with newly diagnosed T1DM with residual insulin secretion,” said researchers at the University of Pécs.
Elaine Cantin discussed how she used the ketogenic diet to manage her son’s type I diabetes and her own aggressive breast cancer in her book, The Cantin Ketogenic Diet For Cancer, Type 1 & 2 Diabetes.
These findings are not surprising to cardiologist Dr. William Davis, who said you can reverse diabetes and enjoy natural weight loss by following a wheat-free ketogenic-style diet.
“The majority of diabetes is reversible,” said Dr. Davis, author of the bestseller, Wheat Belly Total Health. “Most people can make the choice to have diabetes or to not have it. This is because it is caused by diet. Sadly, it is caused by conventional advice to ‘cut your fat and eat healthy whole grains.’”
In his practice, Davis observed that patients experienced relief from diabetes, joint pain, heart disease, inflammatory disorders, acid reflux, asthma, migraines and depression by eliminating sugar and wheat from their diets.
“Wheat is a big reason — if not the biggest reason — why Americans are the most overweight population in the history of mankind,” said Dr. Davis, who called wheat poisonous and addictive.
According to Dr. Davis, the wheat we eat today is totally different from the wheat our parents and grandparents consumed because it has been scientifically engineered.
He said today’s “Frankenwheat” raises your blood sugar more than most candy bars, and noted that two slices of whole wheat bread raises blood sugar higher than 6 teaspoons of sugar.
Blood sugar spikes fuel inflammation, which causes weight gain, belly fat storage, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer, said Davis. Reducing sugar intake and increasing your consumption of healthy fats aids weight loss and prevents depression, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
To ensure healthy blood sugar and optimal health, scientists suggests consuming a ketogenic-style diet that incorporates plenty of high-quality animal fats, olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin D, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.
Obesity expert Dr. Eric Westman agrees. Westman, director of the Duke University Obesity Clinic, has helped hundreds of morbidly obese people lose thousands of pounds and reverse their diabetes and heart disease with a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic-style diet.
Reducing carbs and consuming plenty of healthy fats accelerates weight loss and protects your brain and body, said Dr. Westman, co-author of Keto Clarity. “I tell my patients not to fear the fat,” said Dr. Westman. “Eat lots of fat. There’s no problem with fat.”
