Vicki Gunvalson, star of “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” feels fantastic after losing 22 pounds with a 500-calorie-a-day low carb diet.
Gunvalson said her recent split from former boyfriend Brooks Ayers and her desire to start dating again inspired her weight loss.
“I lost 22 pounds,” Vicki told ET (see video). “It was over a 3-month period. I cut out all alcohol. [I was down to] 500 calories a day.”
Gunvalson added: “No carbs, so I just did lettuce and grapefruit in the morning: celery, carrots, whatever it could be. Just very raw, and then nothing really for lunch. I would just do water, lemon water. And then at night, I would just have salad and protein, and it worked!”
Vicki, who appears on season 11 of The Real Housewives of Orange County, decided to lose weight because she wanted a dramatic life change after being depressed over her failed romances.
“I was in such a depressed state,” said Gunvalson, author of More Than a Housewife. “I’m 54 now, and your metabolism changes.
“I put on 10 pounds from my 40s to my 50s. I don’t want to be a bodybuilder, but I wanted to feel like, ‘I’m gonna be single now.’ I gotta look my best, right?”
Vicki Gunvalson’s diet was super-strict and extremely low-calorie, but if she had followed a low carb, high-fat diet like Atkins or the ketogenic plan, she probably could’ve lost just as much weight without starving herself.
Other celebrities who have lost dramatic amounts of weight with a low-carb diet include Melissa McCarthy, who recently lost 75 pounds.
Similarly, reality TV star Kim Kardashian lost over 65 pounds in 6 months with the low-carb high-fat Atkins diet, as Celebrity Health Fitness has reported.
Low carb diets such as the ketogenic and Atkins diets promote rapid weight loss by inducing the body to burn fat for fuel, said obesity expert Dr. Mark Hyman, author of Eat Fat, Get Thin.
In addition to fueling weight loss, clinical research shows a low carb diet reverses type 2 diabetes and prevents inflammation — a key driver of diseases such as cancer and dementia, said Dr. Hyman, who also wrote The Blood Sugar Solution Detox Diet.
Dr. David Ludwig, a physician and Harvard nutrition professor, agrees. Ludwig himself lost 20 pounds in 3 months without feeling hungry or counting calories with a low-carb diet.
Low carb diets keep blood sugar stable, suppress appetite and prevent depression, said Dr. Ludwig, author of Always Hungry? Conquer Cravings, Retrain Your Fat Cells.
