The pop icon’s anti-aging fitness secrets are a mostly vegan, macrobiotic diet, weightlifting and yoga workouts, as Celebrity Health Fitness has reported.
“I started doing yoga again, which I haven’t done in years,” said Madonna. “I’m so used to exercising with music playing very loud. And when you do yoga, you’re just listening to your breath.”
Yoga is anti-aging and promotes natural weight loss by reducing stress, building lean muscles and suppressing appetite, said Tara Stiles, author of Yoga Cures.
Pilates is an excellent low-impact way to lose weight and tone your entire body, said fitness expert Cassey Ho, author of Hot Body Year Round.
Madonna’s diet is mostly vegan and macrobiotic, which emphasizes whole, organic foods and limits processed junk, animal products and sugar.
Other celebrity vegans include Demi Moore and supermodel Christie Brinkley, who’s drop-dead gorgeous at age 62.
The age-defying health and weight loss effects of vegan and vegetarian diets are no surprise to Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center.
“A diet of minimally processed foods close to nature — predominantly plants — is decisively associated with health promotion and disease prevention,” said Dr. Katz, author of Disease-Proof.
Dr. Neal Barnard agrees. “Studies suggest that free radicals [toxic molecules that form in the body] contribute to aging,” Barnard wrote in his book, the 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart. “A vegan diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, is full of antioxidants which help protect the body from damage by free radicals.”
“I became very obsessed with death, and the idea that you never know when death will arrive,” Madonna confessed. “So one has to do as much as possible all the time to get the most out of life.”
