Mariah Carey’s spectacular split from billionaire Australian businessman James Packer has sent shockwaves around the world. But the bust-up may come down to issues Mariah has dealt with for most of her professional life–jealously and control.
The musical diva burst on the scene in 1990 with release of her debut album Vision of Love.
Within three years, she was married to her music mogul manager Tommy Mottola, who was 21 years her senior. Although they stayed together for four years, Carey later said she was imprisoned by Mottola’s controlling personality and jealous fits of rage.
She finally left him in 1997 in another spectacular break-up.
In a tell-all memoir released three years ago, Mottola revealed that he abused his ex-wife, whom he met at 18, when she was still an unknown.
Although their relationship started out as purely professional, it quickly evolved into a sexually exploitative, controlling and emotionally abusive one, he confesses.
Mottola, who was hugely successful as a music producer and label head, forced Mariah to ditch her boyfriend and assumed control of all her producers and song writers. He drove her mercilessly to make records and advance her career with spectacular results. She’s won five Grammy awards.
They finally divorced in 1997. Carey started dating singer Luis Miguel a year later. They broke up in 2001.
Her next serious relationship, with comedian Nick Cannon, led to marriage in 2008 after a whirlwind romance. They’d met when Cannon was hired to appear in her “Bye, Bye” music video. They “connected instantly,” he said in an interview at the time.
At 38, Carey was 11 years older than Cannon, who was 27 when they got married. They had two children, twins Monroe and Morocco, before they drifted apart and split last year.
Cannon’s workaholic lifestyle reportedly helped drive a wedge in their marriage, according to TheImproper, citing an inside source. The couple has been on the rocks for months.
At the time, Cannon was working three jobs; his New York City radio show “Rollin’ with Nick Cannon,” reality television show “America’s Got Talent,” and another syndicated radio show “Cannon’s Countdown.”
Carey’s past relationships are relevant because they provide insights into her romance with Packer. The Australian businessman inherited control of the family company, Consolidated Press Holdings Limited, and built it into a multi-billion-dollar operation.
The were first spotted together in June a year ago on a romantic vacation on the Italian island of Capri. The pair became engaged in January following yet another whirlwind romance.
With a net worth was estimated to be around $5 billion, Packer seemed a good fit with Carey for a number of reasons, not the least of which was his wealth.
Despite her own fortune, estimated to be around $500 million, Carey is known to literally tear through money. But this time money appeared to be no object. Packer gave her a 35-carat diamond engagement ring worth an estimated $10 million.
For the first time, Carey was also dating someone close to her own age. Packer, at 49, is only four years older. But elements of their own personalities and past relationshps were potentially destabilizing from the get go.
Among them, are Packer’s controlling personality and fits of jealousy–the very things that led to Mariah’s split from Mattola. Packer, also wasn’t as attentive as Mariah wanted him to be, a fault that led to her split from Cannon.
While he was busy running his family business in Australia, she was 10,000 miles away performing at her Caesar’s Palace residency in Las Vegas.
Carey felt her fiance wasn’t “present” enough for her, a source also later told UsWeekly
If there is one thing Mariah demands, it’s constant attention, according to those who know here.
She got it from choreographer and backing dancer Bryan Tanaka, who worked closely with her in Vegas. Tanaka, 33, with a stunning dancer’s body, is 13 years younger than Mariah. He quickly filled the gap in her life.
She also may not have been able to resist the attention of a younger man, who was literally by her side day in and day out.
According to some reports, Tanaka’s closeness to Carey caused Packer to fly into a jealous rage last June. He reportedly pulled strings and had the dancer banned from Caesar’s Palace, gossip site TMZ reported.
The pair’s engagement unraveled during a stay on a luxury yacht in Greece in September, according to London’s Daily Mail. They haven’t been seen together in more than a month.
“Mariah and James had a fight in Greece, and have not seen each other since. The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah,” her spokesperson told Entertainment Tonight.
The couple is reportedly trying to work things out, which may explain why Carey was still wearing her $10 million ring when she was spotted out last night.
Packer, or Carey or both may also have gotten cold feet as their impending marriage approached. At first Carey said she wanted to get married sooner rather than later.
But she told E! News her plans were still unsettled.
“we’re trying to talk it through,” she said. “It’s like some things are a surprise, some things are like, ‘How do we fit them into the schedule?’ So, everybody just has to wait and see, including me. We’re figuring it out.”
Now though, there may be no wedding at all. This is a developing story. Stay tuned by following Celebrity Health & Fitness on Twitter. Just click the link below.
