Danielle Brooks has become the poster girl for plus-size women, ah, make that normal-sized women through her work with Lane Bryant the lingerie fashion house. Her latest campaign takes a shot at those other lingerie models known as Angels, as in, “I’m No Angel.”
The commercial went viral after appearing during the Emmy Awards telecast and Brooks has it proudly posted on her Instagram feed.
She was joined in the spot by Candice Huffine, Denise Bidot and Ashley Graham, the queen of plus-size models.
Brooks, who rounded out the quartet, is best known for playing inmate “Taystee” in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.”
She broke into fashion last year on the runway at the Christian Siriano for Lane Bryant show. The commercial is from the brand’s #ThisBody campaign.
Brooks is also branching out on her own. She’s working with Universal Standard on her own collection.
And it’s all part of her mission to let curvy women know they’re just as deserving of feeling sexy—in both clothes and lingerie.
“This time, the challenge for me was actually during the shoot because I was feeling so bloated, and it was making me feel uncomfortable. I was worried about how I was looking in the lingerie,” she told Shape magazine in a recent interview.
“Then at one point, I put a picture on my Instagram of me just lifting my shirt up and I was like, you know what? Why am I even caring about this? This is my body, this is where it is today, and I’ve gotta roll with it. I’ve gotta love it. And that’s what I did. I love the shots now and I hope that other women find the strength to love their body at whatever stage it’s at—even when they’re feeling their most bloated.”
“For a lot of plus-size women, you don’t see advertisements for yourself. That’s why that representation really matters,” she says.
