Candice Swanepoel has never had to look very far to find a model for her swimsuit line. She’s always posed herself, and this year is no different. Despite giving birth in June to her second child, she was back in shape to show off her 2019 “Tropic of C” swimwear. Here’s how she did it.

Swanepoel, who grew up in South Africa, was a natural. A willowy five-feet, nine and a half inches tall, she stood out in a crowd and was discovered at 15 while shopping in a flea market.

She turned 30 last month and is still at the top of her game, after giving birth to two children. In Oct. 2016, her first son was born and she gave birth again to her second son this past June.

Swanepoel caused a stir when she posted photos of herself in a bikini 12 days after giving birth. She was still carrying some of her baby weight and some boo-birds called her out. But she wasn’t having any of it and fired back with this empowering message.

“I’m not ashamed to show my post-partum tummy. I am proud actually… I carried my son for 9 months in there. I think I’ve earned the right to have a little tummy. Is it because I’m a model? Well we are normal people too, so let me enjoy the beach in peace please. I don’t have to hide my stomach just because people have unrealistic standards of women. We create life… what can you do? Ladies are all in this together. Be kind to each other.”

Some of her diet and exercise tips might be surprising. She confides that she starts every morning with a shower and coffee. “I can’t really do anything until I’ve had a coffee or a shower — it resets me,” she says.

During her pregnancies, however, she gave up coffee for decaf or tea and also substituted chocolate.

From there, she has breakfast.

My breakfast varies depending on my mood. I do a nice beauty smoothie. It contains coconut oil, flaxseed oil, banana, protein, some kind of antioxidant fruit like blueberries or strawberries, or some nut butter. I discovered it from doing research; I like to be on beauty blogs. I’ve always loved nutrition and because I’ve worked out for so many years, I’ve figured out what’s best for my body and keeping my energy up. It’s evolved from that.”

But she’s not obsessed about what she eats. She says she may also have eggs and toast or even a grilled cheese sandwich, she told New York Magazine’s “The Cut.” She toasts the bread on a stove.

Her overall philosophy is to maintain balance. “It’s being happy and healthy. I don’t like restrict myself from certain foods that I want, or kill myself at the gym. It’s really what’s comfortable for my body at the time and what’s best at that moment,” she says.

“I’ve always been in tune with my body. I started dancing when I was really young, and it just gives you a different sense of your body. Then I started with Victoria’s Secret and building my body with Justin [Gelband],” she adds.

One piece of advice she shares is to know your own body. “I’ve been lucky — I was born with quite a fast metabolism. I’m that girl who orders the healthy plate with a side of fries. Your body is like a machine and everyone’s is different. I know mine quite well,” she says.

After she gave birth, she began doing her workouts at night. She explains her routine:

“I’ve been doing my own kind of yoga. It’s not traditional yoga, but I put on some music and mix in some Pilates and squat resistance stuff I’ve learned over the years. It’s calm: I can meditate through it and get some flow with some music. It’s a little ritual for me. I do it every time I feel overwhelmed and stressed — I try at least twice a week. How often I do it depends on if I get my baby down or not.”

Her beauty routine is another matter; it’s detailed and she follows it closely:

“I cleanse, tone, moisturize, and then do an eye cream religiously, twice a day. I use this gentle green-tea cleanser that I get from Whole Foods. My serum is Biotherm [Swanepoel is the face of the brand] — they have one called the Phyto Plankton. It takes two weeks to start seeing a difference so I’m putting it to the test. I used to use the Colbert serum, that’s a great one. For my eye cream, I use the Colbert Uplift. I like his products a lot. My moisturizer is from my facialist, which I can’t give you. It’s a secret! My daytime routine is pretty much the same, but instead of the serum I use a retinol that my facialist gave me. It’s a pretty light one because my skin gets sensitive with the stronger ones.”

Swanepoel branched out from modeling last year with her very own swimsuit line. Her Tropic of C’s resort 2019 campaign is her second line.

She traveled to Utah’s Amangiri resort with trusty photographer Jerome Duran to flaunt her designs, which include high-cut bikini bottoms, bandeau tops and one-piece swimsuits.

Candice favors minimal silhouettes and a neutral color palette. Last year, she showed off high-waisted bikini bottoms, one-piece silhouettes and retro style bikini tops.
