Meg Ryan was glowing when she and John Mellencamp were engaged, but the fire has apparently burned out nearly a year to the day since that happy announcement.
She reportedly has “no regrets” about her decision, according to tabloid reports.
Mellencamp, 68, and the 57-year-old actress had been a couple for more than eight years. They finally got engaged in November 2018.
“She’d had enough and ended [their engagement]. She has no regrets,” an anonymous source told UsWeekly, which is known for sometimes sketchy reporting.
Ryan gleefully announced their engagement in an Instagram post illustrated with a photo of a napkin inscribed with the word “ENGAGED!”
But she was recently spotted in public without her engagement ring, which sparked early rumors.
It’s unclear at this point whether he, or she, got cold feet over the marriage.
In August, Ryan told InStyle magazine she was in no rush to get married. She said she wanted to focus on her career, specifically, producing and directing. That’s often Hollywood code for being single, again.
Meg said she was also trying to “figure out how to provide” for her two children, 15-year-old Daisy and 27-year-old Jack.
“I’m focused on producing. I’m also teeing myself up to direct, and I’m working on a fun e-commerce project with some of my friends,” she said.
“But most of all, what I’m ambitious for in the 12 hours a day that I’m awake is my kids’ happiness. I just am. I’m either figuring out how to provide for them, figuring out how to say it right, figuring out all those mom things. I want them to be happy.
“And today I’m happy too. Yes, I’m going to get married at some point. But for now this engagement thing is a state of grace.”
Meg divorced former husband Dennis Quaid, father of son Jack, in 2001.
“Divorce is hard,” she said at the time.
“I wasn’t easy on myself around then. I retreated. But that tough time was necessary. I became a better person after all of that. And I grew up a lot.”
In 2006, Ryan adopted a 14-month-old girl from China whom she named Daisy True.
Ryan has worked steadily in Hollywood since her acting career began in 1981 when she was 20. Her best known role was in the 1989 Nora Ephron romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally.”
She also received raves for her role in another Ephon commedy “Sleepless in Seattle” with Tom Hanks.
Her most recent film was 2015’s “Ithica,” which she directed and starred in along with Hanks. Her son, Jack Quaid also appeared in the film.
It was roundly panned by critics, scoring only a 22 on rottentomatoes, which tracks reviews.
“‘Ithaca’ is the sort of frustrating movie that’s just good enough to make you wish it were a lot better,” wrote Jay Leydon of trade rag Variety.
Her career has been on hold since then.
Last year, Mellencamp revealed he was working on a new musical based on his 1982 No. 1 hit “Jack & Diane.”
This past June, Republic Records, Federal Films and Universal Music Theatricals announced that the musical had been greenlighted.
Mellencamp has been married three times.
His first marriage to Priscilla Esterline lasted from 1970 until 1981. His second to Victoria Granucci lasted from 1981 until 1989.
In a high-profile marriage, he wed fashion model Elaine Irwin in 1992.
They announced their separation in December 2010 after 18 years of marriage and were divorced the following year in “an amicable settlement of all issues.”
He bounced to Ryan, but they broke up for the first time in 2014 after dating for over three years.
Mellencamp was linked with supermodel Christie Brinkley in August 2016 before he and Ryan got back together.
The singer has five children, daughter Michelle from his marriage to Esterline; daughters Teddi Jo and Justice from his marriage to Granucci; and sons Hud and Speck from his marriage to Irwin.
