Avocados have soared in popularity and a slew of celebs, such as Oprah, Zac Efron and Chrissy Teigen make them a part of their regular diet. Now The Mayo Clinic gives the superfood an “A” for its health benefits.

Avacado Deviled Eggs

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs, hard boiled
  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley
  • 2 teaspoons ground cayenne pepper
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • Directions
    Cut eggs lengthwise and remove yolks. Set aside half the yolks in bowl and discard the others. In a medium bowl combine egg yolks, avocado, lime juice, mayonnaise, half of the parsley, cayenne pepper and garlic. Spoon mixture into egg whites and garnish with other half of chopped parsley.

Views on the tropical fruit have been mixed because of their high fat content.

But they are finally getting their 15 minutes of fame because they not only taste good, they also have real health benefits, says Katherine Zeratsky, a Mayo Clinic registered dietitian nutritionist.

“An avocado is technically a fruit, and it’s a nutritious fruit,” she says. “Avocados are healthy, despite being a little higher in fat. The type of fat matters.”

They contain mostly good fats — monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, plus a small amount of saturated fat.

“The saturated fat is the one that we’re most concerned about in terms of heart disease risk,” says Zeratsky.

An avocado is also a good source of vitamins A and E, and it contains fiber. “Having some fiber may help lower cholesterol,” which is important to good heart health.

Zeratsky says to use an avocado in smoothies, salads and toppings for a sandwich, but keep portion size in mind.

“A whole avocado has about 250 calories. If that fits into your daily calorie allowance, then you might be able to have a whole avocado,” she says.

Avacado Dip
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup fat-free sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons chopped onion
  • 1/8 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted and mashed (about 1/2 cup)

Directions
In a small bowl, combine sour cream, onion, hot sauce and avocado. Mix to blend the ingredients evenly. Serve with baked tortilla chips or sliced vegetables.

Avocados even have their own national holiday in August.

U.S. households ate 436 million pounds of the green fruit in 1985. Last year, they consumed more than 2.4 billion pounds.

Other than being trendy, the avocado gets an ‘A’ for nutritional benefits because it contains nearly 20 vitamins and minerals.

“Every morning I have egg whites and avocado and a piece of wheat toast. For lunch I love a salad and dinner is usually a risotto or pasta,” she says.

Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus loves them. In fact, she tattooed her upper left arm with a small avocado image. The singer named her tattoo “Baby Avi.”

Victoria Beckham
Victoria says the fruit is her No. 1 go-to fruit to maintain and retain her skin. “All you need to do is smash your ripe avocado until it is pasty and apply it onto your face. Since off with clean water after 15 minutes and you would be good to go,” she says.

Miranda Kerr
The former Victoria’s Secret model has been an advocate since giving birth to her first child. She always ensures that salads with feta cheese, avocado and spinach are on her dinner menu. She stated that her favorite snack of all time would be an avocado half with a small touch of sea salt and organic almonds.

Tom Selleck
Tom Selleck grows his own avocados. His farm covers 63 acres and he sells the fruit commercially. During the California drought, he was accused of stealing water to keep his trees from withering.

Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigen, wife of musician John Legend, loves avocado toast. She’s included such ingredients as roasted carrot toast with a gorgonzola and pear crostini with thyme, not to mention avocado.
